Internet Speed & Price Checker

Many households pay for more speed than they use. Tell this checker how your home uses the internet and see the speed you need and whether your price looks high.

Tell us who is online at your house and what your current plan costs. We’ll estimate the speed you actually need and show whether you’re paying for more than that, plus what you could save.

Typical ranges are approximate national figures for 2025-2026 (regular price after promos, before equipment fees); your area and provider will differ. Savings are estimates, not guarantees.

    How this works

We add up the bandwidth each activity typically uses at the same time: about 25 Mbps per 4K stream, 6 Mbps per HD stream, 4 Mbps down and 3.5 Mbps up per video call, 8 Mbps per gamer, plus a little for each person and smart device. Then we add 25% headroom so things stay smooth when Wi-Fi isn’t perfect, and round up to a common plan tier. Your price is compared with the typical regular price range for your current tier, and any rental fee is counted as money you could keep by owning your equipment. Wi-Fi coverage and older devices can slow you down more than your plan speed, so a mesh system or a router upgrade sometimes fixes problems a faster plan won’t.

    Questions people ask

Is 1 Gig internet worth it?

For most households, no. A family streaming 4K on two TVs while someone is on a video call uses well under 100 Mbps. Gig plans make sense for very large households, heavy uploaders, or when the gig plan costs about the same as slower tiers.

Will a slower plan make my Wi-Fi worse?

Not if the new tier still covers your peak use. Dead zones and buffering are usually caused by router placement or old equipment, not plan speed. Test speed next to the router before blaming the plan.

Should I buy my own modem and router?

Usually yes, if your provider allows it. Rentals often run $10-$15 a month, so a $150 setup typically pays for itself within a year. Check your provider’s approved device list first, and return the rented gear to avoid fees.

What to do with your result

If your plan is faster than you need, ask your provider for the price of the next tier down. Lower tiers are often much cheaper, and you can usually move back up later if it does not work for you.

Check your bill for equipment rental fees too. Buying a compatible modem and router can replace a monthly rental for many providers, though you should confirm the model list with your provider first. Our internet and TV guides cover both steps.

    Frequently asked questions

    Do I need gigabit internet?

Most households do not. Gigabit can help in large households with many heavy users or frequent big uploads, but streaming, video calls and gaming work well on far less.

Should I buy my own router instead of renting one?

If your provider allows it, buying a compatible modem and router can pay for itself over time. Confirm compatibility first and keep the rental equipment’s return receipt.

Why is my internet slow even on a fast plan?

Wi-Fi coverage is often the cause, not the plan. Try moving the router to a central, open spot and testing speed with a cable before paying for a faster tier.
